Alex
Height 30.5 inches
Weight 22lbs 4 oz
Head 49.5 cm
Avery
Height 29inches
Weight 22lbs 6oz
Head 48 cm
Alex is 50th percentile for height and weight, but his head circumference is off the charts. The kid is 1 and wears 3T hat. Let’s just hope his big head is because he’ll need lots of rooms for a big brain! Avery is 50th percentile for height, 75th for weight (Yeah – the baby whose weight gain we worried about in the early days?!? She outweighs her brother now) and her head is also off the charts. Don and I always have to tell the doctors that even when I was pregnant, their heads always measured ahead of everything else. We both have big heads too. Poor kids.

Borrowing an idea from my friend Jenn, who has twin boys about 6 weeks younger than A & A, I wanted to make a list of things I don’t want to forget, ever, about these babies. I think most of the time I am so busy enjoying life with them that I don’t ever want to stop and write about it. In no particular order:
We took them to a Japanese Steakhouse this weekend. Let’s just say it’s a good thing the waitress couldn’t see the floor before she gave us the bill. But they loved the food – these are definitely my kids when it comes to eating. Soup, rice, veggies, chicken, it was all a hit.
Avery is very close to walking. She LOVES to hold onto your fingers and toddle around, and I can sometimes get her to take 5 or 6 steps towards me before she falls. Alex, who we thought all along would walk early, has shown no interest. He’s such a speedy crawler, I think he just doesn’t see the point in moving slowly on two feet when he can go quickly on all fours.
Both kids love to swim. The lessons at the Y (all 4 that we made it too – would have been 5 if I hadn’t forgotten their bathing suits one week, but I digress…) paid off. Whether it’s the $10 kiddie pool in the front yard or the inground in the back yard, they love to be in the water and splash. After a few failed attempts, Alex has learned to blow bubbles in the water and likes to practice in the tub, too. Cute stuff.
Lift the flap type board books are their new favorites. My friend Katie got them one called Where Is Baby’s Belly Button? that Avery insists we read, oh, 3 or 4 times in a row, several times per day. I love that they love books at such a young age. We read for 15 minutes before every nap, plus other times during the day when they grab a book and hand it to me.
Avery is also really into pointing at things to hear their names. She wants to know what everything is called. But we still don’t have much in the way of words from either baby. Avery says Mama and barks pretty clearly when the dogs do, and Alex says Oops and Dad. But they understand so much, and have an affirmative grunt sort of thing that they use when you ask them if they want to do something like go outside, go for a walk, swing, etc. It’s amazing to watch language develop in them. They learn so many new things every day.
Alex has really picked up on sign language. He’ll sign bath and toothbrush, as well as more, and he clearly understand the one for hungry, though he hasn’t done it yet. Avery doesn’t show much interest in this like Alex does, but she also does bath and toothbrush.
Alex’s 7th tooth just popped through on the bottom left (his right.) Avery has apparently decided that 4 will get her through life pretty well. They love to brush their own teeth and will crawl into the bathroom and ask (with signs) to do it.
I know I’m forgetting things. I need to be better about writing these things down before they fall out of my incredible shrinking mommy-brain!

Alex has been doing a funny thing lately where he gets a kick out of putting things on things. He often cracks himself up by taking a tiny piece of food during meal time (like a pea) and putting it very carefully on top of his sippy cup. He’ll then giggle and look to you so that you can see how cool it is too.
Wednesday when I came home from work I came in through the garage into the kitchen like I always do. When I came in he was playing on the floor in there with a few toys. One of the things he was playing with was a lid to one of their bottles. It was funny because as soon as I came in and stopped moving he crawled over to me and put the lid on the toe part of my shoe. He got the biggest kick out of seeing it stay there. After I made it fall off he started going back and forth between each foot getting it to sit there.
Maybe he’ll be some kind of an architect or something. He definitely seems interested in building stuff and seeing how stuff works (he’s always turning things over and checking out the bottom).
It’s funny to see them get such a kick out of such simple things!

Like it or not, these babies are down to single digits of days left until they are a year old. I cannot believe it. I really thought Alex would be walking by now – he’s been cruising on things for so long, but he just sits on his butt whenever we try to get him to walk. Avery, on the other hand, thinks she’s so cool when she stands unsupported, and likes to walk holding onto our fingers. It seems like she might be first now. It’s just amazing to see how much they understand and can do now – so different from the helpless beings they were as newborns. Alex’s cool tricks include giving kisses and loving to push anything that has wheels around. And what is it with fart noises that boys find so appealing? He’ll blow raspberries on anything – his own arms, other people’s arms or legs, and tonight he tried the tub water. His teeth are still giving him fits. he finally got two more on top, and I thought we were safe for a while, but now I see a huge white lump and think he has a molar on the way. He’s almost done with bottles, drinking his milk from a sippy cup except at bedtime. Avery is such a little smarty – she knows the difference between Kenna and Colby and will go pet the right one when you tell her to. She refuses to drink milk from a sippy like her brother. She just takes a tiny taste and looks at you like you’re crazy when milk comes out. She has a very special pink bear who’s earned the nickname Stinkbear thanks to her constantly chewing and cuddling it. But it’s really cute to go in at night and see her holding it in her arms.
This past weekend was the longest I’ve been away from them – from Friday afternoon til Sunday morning, for my best friend Jen’s wedding. It was hard to be away for so long. My grandma watched them with another sitter here as well during awake hours. I knew they were in excellent hands, but I still worried about whether they were sleeping well or crying or missing me. Everyone made it and kept to the routine mostly, but I think Avery must have cried more than my grandma has let on. Her voice was pretty hoarse yesterday. I realized that when you’re a mom, you’re always a mom, no matter where you are and where your kids are. On one hand, it was so nice to be away and have some freedom, but I missed their smiles and cuddles so much. And a Saturday night of partying means a Sunday hangover – wow is that hard with kids. Holy Cow. I actually wished they liked TV so I could camp them out in front of it and crash, but they don’t, and I didn’t. But we survived, in the end, and I am glad to be back to normal life with my little ones.
