Digital camera advice?

We need a new digital camera. The old one just seems to be having mechanical issues where the zoom function seems to get stuck anytime you touch it. Is it me or do these cameras only really seem to last 2-3 years? The current Cannon that we have is the 3rd one we’ve had since Jen and I have been together. We’re ready for our 4th one.

Luckily with the prices as cheap as they are these days I guess we may get away with spending under $150. I wanted to see if anybody has any suggestions on small compact models they may have and that seem to last and work well. I am great at doing research on the web but I’m finding that even the ones that I’ve bought, which were highly rated, don’t seem to last.

I have a Canon XTi that I absolutely LOVE and then for my “purse” camera I have a Canon SX100 IS that is pretty nifty. Here is the breakdown for the SX.
    Pros:
It has image stability so your pictures won’t be blurry (of course getting a non blurry shot of fast moving babies is a challenge, but for everyday use the IS does help with shaky hands or any movement by you)
    The video seems pretty good
The flash isn’t automatic…you can pop it up or leave it down for no flash shots
10x zoom – this thing really can zoom in close
    Manual modes
Auto modes include portrait, macro, night, and I think landscape
It shoots b&w, sepia, vivid color, neutral color, or regular color
Runs off of regular AA batteries ( I use the rechargeable ones)
Comes with good software and even some editing software

    Cons:
It does take a bit for the camera to be ready for the next shot. (slow recharge time)
A bit bigger than the point and shoots. You can’t fit it in your pocket

A fantastic place to review ALL camera’s is http://www.dpreview.com It give professional and user reviews.

    Good luck!

we have the canon power shot and really like it. We’ve had it since November 2005 and have had absolutely no issues. It does have a little delay which is annoying, but you have to pay the big bucks I think to avoid that. We like it because it also had a video option!

I actually ended up ordering a Canon PowerShot A570IS. We’re waiting for it to arrive now so I can’t give any reviews yet. According to Amazon it got very good reviews and while it’s slightly larger than our previous Cannon it seems to offer a few better features and still is small enough to be convenient to lug around.

With the new baby coming any day now you can guarantee that we’ll be giving it a good workout :)
